Saturday, March 18th from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

Christ Lutheran Church
780 Ashbury Ave. – El CerritoMuslims are frequently stereotyped as holding to oppressive attitudes and practices toward women. Muslim Women Beyond the Stereotypes explores the rich and complex reality of Muslim women’s lives around the world. Starting with a discussion of the sources of stereotypes concerning Muslim women, it moves on to present the very varied roles and statuses of Muslim women globally and in the U.S., showing that the reality of their lives belies any simplistic stereotypes and that Muslim women, like women everywhere, have made enormous strides in the modern world. It calls attention to the growing number of Muslim women prominent in many fields, from heads of state to major figures in the arts and sciences. It presents the support for gender equity found in the Qur’an and hadith and the contributions of Muslim women leaders from the very beginning of Islam. A discussion of gender relations and modest dress leads to a consideration of the challenges faced by women in parts of the Muslim world and the efforts of Muslim women’s organizations to meet those challenges.ING Content Director Ameena Jandali will be giving this presentation and will allow for ample time for Q&A.
