Free Working Retreats

“Human work becomes a service raised to the grandeur of God.” The Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church #262

The concepts “retreat” and “work” may seem like opposites. Typically, San Damiano serves as a retreat from the rigors of daily life. In relaxation, many people deepen their spirituality and relationship with God.

But what about those among us who can’t sit still? Or need physical activity to relax? Or see their work and service as their prayer? Perhaps a working retreat is for you.

During a working retreat, guests do a variety of projects at San Damiano. Tasks are given according to each person’s abilities and include gardening and landscaping, carpentry, laundry, indoor cleaning, and clerical work. But is not all work. Each day includes meals, shared prayer, meditation, Eucharist, and faith sharing. In exchange for your labor, the retreat is free to participants.
