Concord Walk Raises Awareness about Autism

The 4th annual Autism Awareness Walk will be held in Concord on Saturday April 22nd from 9:30am – 12:00pm (Rain or Shine!) . This is a great opportunity to get some exercise and walk with families, friends, individuals with Autism and other community members to raise awareness about the increasing prevalence of autism and the need for increased support services for individuals in our community. This worthwhile event is co-sponsored by the Adaptive Learning Center and the Transition Options Program (TOPS) through Mt. Diablo Adult Education. Both organizations provide support and services for individuals with neuro-developmental disabilities, Asperger’s and High Functioning Autism.

A $25 registration fee ($15.00 for individuals with disabilities) will provide each participant with a custom t-shirt designed by an individual with autism.  The route is just under two miles and begins at the  Loma Vista Adult Center (1266 San Carlos Ave, Concord). It includes a mid-point stop for refreshments at The Adaptive Learning Center Community Garden (3227 Clayton Rd, Concord).

The Adaptive Learning Center is a non-profit organization in Concord, serving individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders and Developmental Disabilities. For the past 28 years ALC has been making a difference in the lives of many people, providing programs and supports to enable their clients to live and work independently in the community.   ALC facilitates growth and achievement of clients, through education, structured activities, vocational and independent living support.

Donna Feingold, Executive Director of ALC, commented, “We would love to see more people from the community come out and support our clients and this walk. Autism is so prevalent in our society that almost everyone is touched by it.  The walk is a great way to create more awareness and celebrate the value and uniqueness of the individuals we serve.”

The Transition Options Program (TOPS) is a one of a kind program providing education and support to adults with Asperger’s, High Functioning Autism and other related disorders. Students receive education and support in successfully navigating life’s on-going transitions including, higher education, independent living, employment and the establishment of fulfilling adult social relationships.  The Transition Options Program is at Loma Vista Adult Center.

Karen Lingenfelter-Carman, Program Coordinator of the TOPS Program, Commented, “The walk is such a great community event that not only increases awareness, but also provides inspiration and hope for individuals with autism and their families.”
