Do the Qur’an and the Bible unite or divide Jews, Christians, and Muslims?
The relationship between the three Abrahamic faiths—Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are deep, fascinating, and complex. In post-9/11 America, mistrust of Islam and Muslims has reached new heights and is reflected in national and local debates and decision-making as well as in conversations at the dinner table. Attacks on Muslims and their houses of worship are occurring more and more frequently. And in the middle of all this, polls show that Americans want to learn about Islam beyond the stereotypes and rhetoric.
The Three Abrahamic Testaments aims to provide accurate information about Islam and showcases core Muslim teachings side by side with Jewish and Christian teachings from the Bible and other core religious sources.
About the author: Ejaz Naqvi, M.D., is chief of the Chronic Pain Program and Director of Graduate Medical Education at a Kaiser Permanente facility in the San Francisco Bay Area. He serves on the board of Islamic Scholarship Fund and he is Past President of the Islamic Center of Zahra in Pleasanton. He is also a dedicated interfaith leader and serves on the Board of Directors of the Interfaith Council of Contra Costa County. Dr. Naqvi is accessible and down to earth. He studies and teaches with colleagues of other faiths to help bring about understanding and cooperation between peoples of faith.
Author Tour: Focusing on local and regional events at mosques, synagogues, and churches, college campuses throughout California and the west coast, plus radio and TV interviews.
Dispelling myths, The Three Abrahamic Testaments analyzes and compares the similarities and differences between the Qur’an and the Bible. Neither apologetic, nor polemical, it is an indispensable resource for those seeking a better understand between the Abrahamic faiths.
Fresh view: Dr. Naqvi brings 20 years of Islamic and interfaith scholarship to the table. His translations and analysis are surprisingly refreshing for all readers – Muslim, Jewish, Christian, for those of all other faiths and those who profess no faith.
The Three Abrahamic Testaments has three sections:
Part 1 – God
Part 2 – Prophets, Scriptures, and People of the Book
Part 3 – Daily Life
Within these sections, Dr. Naqvi begins each topic with Islamic sources and then shows how Jewish and Christian scriptures and traditions address the same issues. Here are some of the issues tackled in the book:
• Do the Quran and the Bible promote violence?
• Do the Abrahamic scriptures render women as second-class citizens?
• Does jihad mean, “killing all infidels”?
• Does the Quran actually call Christians and the Jews “infidels”?
• Is the “God of the Quran” the same as the “God of the Bible”?
• What are the Islamic views on Mary, Jesus, Moses and other Biblical figures?
“Dr. Naqvi has created another well presented overview of the Abrahamic traditions by exposing us to a greater view of the Qur’an and the Islamic tradition. I highly recommend this resource for congregations as a way to expose their congregants to the comparative teachings of Islam, Christianity and Judaism…” –Rev. William McGarvey, Executive Director, Interfaith Council of Contra Costa County, California
“It is more than refreshing to probe a book that does not neutralize or sensationalize the difference found in the Abrahamic religious traditions. The Three Abrahamic Testaments is an important contribution to interfaith dialogue and understanding. It provides an inspiring model for how that dialogue might be engaged in a way that is both informative and healing.” –Rev. Thomas P. Bonacci, C.P., Co-founder of The Interfaith Peace Project of Northern California
“The book’s format is easy to grasp, yet it addresses complex issues, including gender and jihad. The Three Abrahamic Testaments makes a significant contribution to understanding among Jews, Christians and Muslims in our overly polarized world.” –Michael Wolfe, author of The Hadj: One Thousand Roads to Mecca and Taking Back Islam
-“Dr. Ejaz Naqvi has side- stepped the major competitive questions of “whose religion is right” and “whose religion is best.” Instead, he touches upon the essence of all three Abrahamic faiths and the religious streams that spring from them.” –Pamela Frydman, founding Rabbi of Or Shalom Jewish Community and author of Calling on God
“This book will become a primary tool for interfaith understanding through scriptural reasoning and the comparative study of religious text.” –Rabbi Reuven Firestone, Regenstein Professor in Medieval Judaism and Islam, Hebrew Union College
